Vicki, have attached an image to show you what I mean if you can get a better picture!
How many times have you pointed your finger at someone physically or metaphorically as you blamed them for some situation?
When there is one finger pointing to another there are three pointing back at you!
I heard a new version of this the other day that I thought as profound. I had never noticed that when we do the finger pointing thing, our thumbs point upwards!
This is significant from the point of view that people do not remember words! They remember symbols that are attached to feelings.
If you are in the corporate world; in sales; a leader; a parent or deal with people at all, remember this - facts and figures do not change people’s behaviors, telling them stories and giving them symbols does.
Branding and advertising is all about this. Think the Coke sign, the ‘Golden Arches’ of Macdonalds.
So today I am giving you a symbol to help you be wiser, more discerning and manage your mood, a critical component of great leadership and good business!
Next time you are blaming someone else, you are pointing an imaginary finger at them.
Quickly remind yourself that although they may be responsible for part of the situation, there are 3 fingers pointing at you, so you have to acknowledge and take responsibility for your contribution to the situation.
The thumb is pointing upwards. It reminds you to see the bigger picture, the larger context. To ask yourself “how important is this incident in the large scheme of things”. To take the ‘higher ground’; to be more mature and use wisdom and discernment in your choices. To check the spirit in which you were acting.
The symbol represents 3 levels:
The finger represents reacting. No thinking, just reacting!
The three represent awareness of your own contribution to this situation.
The thumb represents higher consciousness, a reminder to see the bigger picture. You will RESPOND differently from that perspective.
WAKE UP AND WIN
Symbols are great reminders to change our behaviors!
