Last week I had the great fortune to hear Hawaiian based Dr Paul Pearsall speak at a conference in New Zealand. Not only was he a powerful speaker, but he also had a spectacular message. You areabout to read some mindblowing information - not due to be released (in his book "The Heart's Code") until April this year.
It may change the way you look at, and feel in, the world.
Dr Pearsall is a heart transplant specialist and scientist who has for decades been working with leading American University research organizations investigating the workings of the heart.
It seems we have grossly underestimated the hearts ability to think and it's effect our whole body.
The following stories are a small sample of what is outlined in much greater detail in his book - and for those cynics out there, backed up by substantial amounts of serious scientific data.
Firstly, the story of a 9 year old girl who received the heart of an 8 year old girl who was murdered. The 9 year old from the day she had the transplant started having recurring nightmares of being murdered. NOt only were these dreams vivid enough for her to accurately describe the murderer, she also knew his name. The man, after investigation, was subsequently convicted of the crime.
Or the married couple - both Doctors - who were driving home from dinner. They were in the middle of an angry argument when the car crashed and he was killed. The wife was so distressed that she haden't made peace with her husband that two years later her life was in tatters. She begged to meet with the recepient of her husbands heart so she could at least make peace with his heart.
A non English speaking Spanish boy (the recepient) and his mother met with the doctor's wife, who asked if she could touch the boy's chest. As she did, she began sobbing , asking her husband's forgiveness and repeating a word that the two of them invented to symbolise the end of a fight. The word was copathetic. The mother of the boy was translating these words and at the end of the outpouring of grief, he asked his mother "what does that word copathetic mean? I have been saying it for the last two years." Remember, he didnt't speak english and it was an invented word!
What about the scenario of when Dr Pearsall arrived in Auckland. He received a phone call from a doctor at the leading hospital asking for advice about a transplant patient who was dying and covered in hives. The recepient of the heart was the doctor's father and they were bewildered by his condition. Dr Pearsall asked if the patient was allergic to anything to which the answer was 'no'. He suggested checking if the donor had any allergies. Yes - to penicillin and his reaction was to break out into hives.
Dr Pearsall then asked about the color of the recepients eyes. They were blue. But before the opepration they were brown. Guess what color eyes the donor had. Yep, blue! Apparently it is very common for recepients to immediately have the same allergies , food cravings, memories and eye color as the donor.
In Dr Pearsall's opinion we have confused the overestimated of the brain to think. He believes , as does Deepak Chopra, that our mind is in our hearts; our feelings are more crucial to our state of health than we ever thought possible. And when I started thinking about this, it makes great sense. But it does require a quantum shift in our beliefs. But then again, we once firmly believed the world was flat!
We already know that hostility is the number one predictor, along with lack of purpose or meaning in life, of heart attack. And that other suppressed feelings are linked to cancer. So being aware of our feelings and working through them is fundamental to good health and performance.
We need to stop the rushing, achieving, and drive to succeed at the expense of our hearts desires (the brain's doing); stop and tune in to your heart - be peaceful and listen to what it wants and needs; pay attention before you damage your heart beyond repair.
There's more interesting information from this amazing man who has beaten cancer among other achievements - but in another article! Until then, work on developing a happy heart; do things to your 'heart's content'; be aware of your 'heart's desire' - maybe our grandparent's knew about this when they had these words as an important part of their vocabulary. We seem to have forgotten those words of wisdom until now.
