From Amanda's very early writing (1990s to early 2000s), shared as it was originally written.
The best part of my job as a speaker is that I often have opportunities to listen to experts in all sorts of areas. This week, it was Dr Michael Colgin, a nutritional scientist from America. He is a brilliant man, who is 58 and - I promise - looks no older than forty - and it's not due to genes! It's entirely due to diet and nutrition.
An author of many books , the latest of which is New Nutrition (a must read if you are interested at all in optimising your years on earth or extending them! In other words, staying younger longer), he runs an institute In San Diego and is the man responsible for the bodies of Sylvester Stallone and Arnie S. Not only does he design their exercise programs and bodies , but he also designs their nutrient and food diet.
He reinforced many of the concepts I have been sharing with you over the last couple of years - like, antioxidants are essential for beating age related changes; degenerative diseases, heart disease, prostate problems , cancer and almost any other disease you can think of. Take antioxidants. Only if you want to feel better, live longer and avoid degenerative diseases! (Antioxidants are vitamins A, C, E, selenium, grape seed extract to name a few - they need to be blended in the right combination for maximum effects).
Exercise is critical for good health and fat management - but if we exercise, we must take more antioxidants, because exercise increases oxidation , which increases the number of free radicals. He bases his advice on hundreds of research projects and recent valid scientific experiments and many of these are listed in his books. So keep exercising but take antioxidants.
Omega Three essential fatty acids (the best source is organic flax oil) is another component of our diets that is lacking and must be supplemented. I have written about this before and the best source of Australian organic flax oil in Australia is from Stoney Creek Oil Products in Victoria. Ideally take one tablespoon per day blended with quark or cottage cheese or tofu. This enhances all the physiological processes in the body and promotes healthy cell regeneration - keeping our cells young.
Drink lots of pure water - the best water purifying systems are those that condense steam - this eliminates most particle impurities and pollutants and chemicals. He belives all faucet water is polluted with toxic metals, pesticides and industrial chemicals to some degree and that the quality of yoru tissues and performance and resistance to injury is dependant on the quality of water we drink.
Interestingly, the American FDA has issued a new food pyramid - that puts whole grains and pulses in the most prominent place - we need more of these than any other food source. (This means -preferably organic - brown rice, buckwheat, and other grains with their hulls on.) Try to buy bread and pastas made with whole grains - usually from health food shops. And pulses are lentils, chick peas, and beans of all types.
Next, come vegetables and fruit. Eat as many of these fresh (and organic) as you can - try to make sure they have not been stored for more than a couple of days as their nutrient value plummets.
Then there are ??????? fish and chicken
followed by the foods you need least of - meat and dairy products.
And we need to eat the correct proportions of these foods - we need 50-55% of our diet to be carbohydrates; 30% to be protein and 15-20% to be fats (essential fatty acids).
Organic foods and products are important because it means the level of pesticides is minimal or hopefully zero and the nutrient level is higher. The problem with ordinary foods , is we are not replenishing our soil with all the micronutrients it used to have and the result is nutrient poor foods that grow in this soil. Processing, drying, or any other alteration of natural foods exposes us to more chamicals and other pollutants and possible toxins.
White refined flour and sugar are your fat loss enemies!
83a Fat Loss with Dr Michael Colgin
Dr Colgin started out fat - as is his whole family still - he now has an incredible body - I mean really fantastic! On scientific measurements, his physiological age is 35! He's 58. So he really is an authority on losing fat (not just weight but fat) and gave the following advice - I'll expand on these in future article:
- plan to lose no more than 1/4 of a kilo per week for long lasting fat loss.
- eat meals regularly or you'll spike insulin which will make your body turn food into fat.
- know that fad diets increase our appetite because we become nutrient dificient
- we need to take multiviatmins and nutrients - in particular we must have chromium picolonate - it's critical for insulin metabolism; muscle mass and fat loss. (minimum 200micrograms per day )
- take L carnitine which helps transport fat to the right place to be burned.
- eat a high fibre diet. The glycaemic index is a measure of how quickly foods are absorbed into our blood stream- high glycaemic index (over 75) foods should be avoided as they cause spikes in our insulin and disrupt our physiology) Bad news - eating rice cakes which we think are so healthy have a high GI and is like eating teaspoons of sugar , which is our bodies arch enemy)
- don't eat sugars of any form unless it's completely natural - like fruit?????
- eat food in the proper proportions (as above)
- eat 'low acid' foods - our diets have become too acidic and so therefore have our bodies. So lots of people chew antiacids! Better to reduce acidity first! It leads ot feeling unwell, gut problems and headaches among other symptoms.
10.we need to exercise - for 30 minutes five times a week doing weight bearing exerices - the best version is in the gym. Pump iron (especially as we grow older). Use a weight you can lift so that your muscles are exhausted after 8-12 repetitions and do 3-4 sets. Muscle is the engine in which fat is burned. If we lose muscle, we lose our ability to burn fat and there is absolutely no need to lose muscle as we age - it's because we stop using them. Fat loss has little to do with calories - and he has lots of data to back up that statement. In fact, low calorie diets 'canabalise' (his word) muscle and so make long term fat loss impossible.
Good news - huffing and puffing as we exercise gets us fit but doesn't burn fat. All we have to do is work out in the gym or with weights and the fat falls off us - permanently - as long as we keep our muscle mass.
And for best results exercise in the mornings - so we keep our metabolic rate high all day. Exercise at night and all we do is spike our metabolic rate and then have it crash when we go to bed.
So there you have it folks - a summary of how to look 40 at 58! If you want more proof , borrow or buy his books and look through the research yourself - it convinced me. I'm not just walking any more - I'm off to the gym - earlier than the 45 age goal I set for myslef! I'm not fat but I don't plan to be

uÄ - 30-45% of our dietWhole graingerm, bran and outer husk - make vegetables 15-20% of your diet and fruits 10-15%and health Eliminate sugar from your diet and you are a long way towards improving your wellness.
So you gasp, what can I eat and it's all too hard! No - it's not once you establish a new routine. And you feel so much better it will encourage you to continue. So arm yourself with more knowledge than I have given you and make informed decisions! Buy New Nutrition and see for yourself - find out how to look and feel ten years younger than you are!
I have written about a scientist I met who is author of New Nutrition amongst other reputable textbooks. Michael . H.
I bought a set of his audio tapes and was impressed by the information he imparted. He gave me permission to share with you some of that advice.
To lose fat - and keep it off forever (or as long as you stick roughly to these principles) -
into your blood stream, in order to stabilise itself , most s
deficient while on them - and that reduction of caloric intake is not the sole answer to weight loss. This nutrient deficient hunger was first noticed in horses! Horses when lacking in essential nutrients start eating the wood of the stables in a desperate attempt to obtain the nutrient they need. Humans of course don't eat wood! But they start on food substances that are just about as nutritious!
multivitaminsmake sure our vitamin intake includesbuilding stimulating 200 micrograms
to the right place to be burned and simultaneously improves brain function
levels and disrupt our physiology. , eating them apparently, which is our body's arch enemy
avoid refined(highly processed)
. We need to make carbohydrates 50-55% of our diets; proteins 30% and fats 15-20%. (Fats being essential fatty acids and oils)
,antacidsApparently many antacids have aluminium in them which causes extensive bone loss. by reducing the intake of acidic foods. "Internal acid rain" as Dr Robert Heaney, osteoporosis specialist at Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska calls it, to, osteoporosis Bad news team - alcohol turns our body's acid! Hint: alkaline foods include broccoli, blackberries, garlic, lentils, mangos, onions, papayas, rockmelons, peppers, sweet potatoes, sea salt, mustard greens, sea vegetables (seaweed)and soy sauce to name a few. Some acidic foods include all antibiotics, all fried foods, beef, beer, butter, cheese, chicken, chocolate, corn, jams, jellies, ice cream, lobster, mussels, nuts, oat bran, peas, pork, soy milk and sugar.
- this is one of the most important points - weexercisewe lose our ability to burn fat. Twe lose muscle masscannibalise, Walk or run if you like as well but for fat loss we need to 'bulk up'.lose fat permanently according to Dr Michael Colgin(New Nutrition, Optimum Sports Performance or Hormonal Health) I'm not an expert but myself either. And I want to look as good as he does and be as healthy as he is when I'm 58!
