A new year resolution - love yourself
love self and love others = life purpose

We know , without doubt, that having some purpose or meaning in life is essential for wellness. Most people , when asked 'what is your purpose in life', look blankly and mutter an astonished 'what?'.
So my gift to you this new year is to recommend you have a pow wow with yourself or yoru family and ponder the purpose of your life! Over dinner with some very well read friends last week, a man who had years ago studied to be a priest and continues his extensive study, stated that the purpose of life was to love yourself first and then give love to others.
That statement had a profound impact on me over the next two days. As I continued to think about, it made more and more sense.
Forget New Year resolutions - discover yoru purpose and all the rest might fall into place.
to extensively Instead of immediately casting this off as a 'cosmic' comment, give it some thought. How many people do you know that can say 'I love myself' and say it with real meaning and inner comfort and confidence - and not as an arrogant mask covering insecurity.

And how can we give true, unselfish love to others without loving ourselves first? The best gift we could ever give our children is an undying belief in their self worth and the ability to appreciate their talents, accept the areas in which they need growth and compassion for their mistakes or attempts at learning along the way.
If we truly loved ourselves, we would not do things that endanger our health or wellness; we would give ourselves all the nurtirion - physical and emotional - that we need
By loving yourself , I don't mean having a passionate love affair , believing that you are the best thing since sliced bread.
Before you have children, learn how to love yoruself so that you can give yoru children timaginable , Gotta give love away to get more

It also reminded me of Steve and Sharon Biddulph's book The Making of Love which is well worth reading. In it they describe three T shirts that people often wear. The first hs the following words emblazoned across it - 'Pleeeeeease , pleeeease love me'. The second for those who have had their heart wounded reads 'I don't need your love anyway'; and the third reads 'I am worth loving'.

These are the people who can truly give love to others, because they have it within them - they are not desperately searching for it from another. else will love us despite the fact we don't believe we are worthy of loving!
When you say it to yourself, what internal response do you hear? Are there lots of voices piping up and giving you all the reasons you are not worth loving? Are they voices of your past - parents, siblings, ex lovers? Or your own? Are the comments valid? If they are, do what you can to change those aspects of yourself. If they are not, work at discarding them and replacing them with more appropriate statements that reflect the truth.
it's greata love of themselves, nutrition. How well - and how - do you nurture all those aspects of yourselves? Is 1998 a good time to make a commitment to give yourself the nurturing you need?
Instead of making a list of new years resolutions, why not examine what happens when you say (with meaning) "I am worth loving"? Write down the responses you hear internally. Question their appropriateness and make changes where necessary.
Perhaps it could be a new year family meeting at which you discuss this concept. Teenagers will certainly find this, and you, 'tragic' and more than likely embarrassing, but they may also find it very positive. Give those you love all the reasons you know that they are eminently lovable. And hopefully they will give you reasons as well.
But most important of all, find ways (even if they involve counselling with a professional) to deal with all the issues that stop you believing "I am worth loving" - because there is no doubt that you are.
Happy 1998 - with this as your goal, it might be the best year of your life!
