How many of us live in the past! Or the fears and beliefs from the past? How many of us let those fears and beliefs ruin our present lives?
We all have had bad stuff happen in our past - no matter what age! Those of us who integrate these things, resolve them, learn from them and move on are generally healthier and happier.
Candace Pert in her excellent book "Molecules of Emotion' shares with us the research finding that suggest those of us hanging onto anger or bitterness or old grudges, resentments or pain from the past, have those emotions form the basis of later disease. It's quite well recognized that 12-18months after some severe stress in our lives, disease of some sort manifests - whether it is a heart attack or cancer or MS.
MIchael Crighton in one of his earlier books, tells us that when he was a young doctor practicing, he would ask all his heart attack patients what caused this heart attack and virtually 100% answered with some emotional, heart 'breaking' event. No one said, high cholesterol or poor diet - although they may of course have contributed! Those bad feelings are more significant than we realize!
So what are you hanging onto that no longer needs to be affecting your behaviors today? If there is anger, bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness or any other negative emotion sitting inside you, you must deal with it! Find help! Whether it's a counsellor, a book, a discussion that has to happen, a group, forgiveness, prayer -whatever it is that you need to do to resolve these feelings from your past, DO IT!
If you are in a marriage or relationship, it's a great practice ground for letting go! LOL Forgiving and moving on has to be the number one quality in successful relationships! It's one I am still working on! LOL
I was walking down a street in New Zealand one day behind a mother and her 16 year old daughter who were obviously having a 'discussion'! The young girl stopped , looked at her mother and said 'oh Mum, build a bridge and get over it!". Now thems were wise words!
Of course I would have been tempted to reprimand the girl if she was my daughter!! LOL But I thought about this afterwards and realized it was a great phrase! I now teach people a symbol that you can see me do on youtube (amandagoretv) and it's a great stress buster and laugh inducer and is a wonderful way for us to stop taking ourselves so seriously!
There are so many things in life that are really quite trivial but to us they seem HUGE! And really we need to build a LOT more bridges, a LOT more often!
What does it take to upset you? And do you need to build some bridges?!
QUESTION/DISCUSSION when you reflected on this idea, were you able to look at some negative things you were hanging onto and see how they were influencing your behavior in the present? More importantly, share with us what you did to LET GO of them and build that bridge! You may give someone else ideas!
